I
don't mean just the music by itself, but the attitude. I hope I'm
wrong, but there doesn't seem to be much Kick it down, Tear it up, Rip the place apart going on at the Garage.

I wanted the Canucks to beat the blues in the first round as much, if
not more than anyone else in Vancouver, but it was a shame to have to
say goodbye to this years' best playoff beard. Mason started that
thing early, and he looked Tuff! Look at him, he will tear you apart!

Think back to some of the other guys that got it done. I prefer
Lanny with his gargantuan cookie duster, but this beard means business!

Old Neidernuts is looking a bit like Gandalf here, and you wonder why he doesn't touch that thing up, but you have to respect that steely stare.

Then if you look at the Canucks playoff beards, there's not a lot going on really. I spent my rent money to see the Cramps play in Seattle once. I still think of it as one of the best decisions I ever made. Nobody approached music like he did. Nothing comes close. Found out during band practice earlier tonite, and we stopped practicing and learned a Cramps song. So many amazing songs. Human Fly. Goo Goo Muck. New Kind of Kick. Bikini Girls With Machine Guns. We ended up doing Garbage Man. When we listened to it we realized it's all one chord. One chord and a great riff. Should have been the easiest thing in the world to learn, but it is so different from the way other people put songs togther. No verses or choruses or bridges. Just one part, and then another part that is kind of a solo. And the first part doesn't seem to have any set length. It's done when Lux says it's done.

So now everyone's asleep, and I am really really sad about Lux and there's no one around to commiserate with so I'm writing this. What a messed up dude. But he lived what he preached, and you have got to respect that. The day I discovered The Cramps everything changed. Everything. Rock and Roll was different. It was dangerous in a whole new way. Man, you don't meet many people who can do that for you. Wish I could have met him.

Sparrow Guitarshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12632435713360476982noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054488970310668434.post-65694725763824549342008-10-01T06:34:00.000-07:002008-10-01T09:09:11.414-07:00I'll bet he looks like Tiger Williams<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSUKDJxqWOzNfsWciHNGZjoP_zfIaWaPHJ66AfRrQpPPNQGRZVXUC4KOu4NLH-5ZVHbchRhz9gu6tWl7diQRnqzV4asGQ-g-1sVq5sMTL-NgpFRoMrS5WYY_3VeRx3vXOWN3kzBQEk9cc/s320/Tiger+Williams.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252185987524482722" />
Do you know who this man is? Dave Tiger Williams is best known as the NHL's all time penalty minute leader. Over 14 seasons he accumulated 3966 minutes in the box, with an additional 455 in the playoffs which is also a record. When I was a kid, Tiger Williams was my favorite NHL enforcer. He and Dave "Cement Head" Semenko are the classic archetypes. Here's a more recent, more refined photo of Tiger.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8p26rHX27tOfkuKzGer13FThoLPExQmtPWgKl6ijocBhX9crMUOa3cf_6gdvTa8Qy8Kr8alZz0qmvmv8BGpR0D_4iv6p29qlbwl8b37EfC4mDKss5TvfBhRHQbFxMS1HVHjbKhGheey4/s320/tiger.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252210700766858258" />

One of my favorite bands are called The Hanson Brothers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtbb9HH3zTJ8oWJyzkxeaivBi6AlW4-t60VeSWFzVX9QyofLrKijstwhCCXJBbTaLidSO06eTrGIPGmod0WII4MkJFUo6vNl6Qb2Pn8qHIEH83hiM-8rpL5qnzkxMiqjgukfXKFc2lX58/s320/Hanson_Brothers_band.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252206977303128050" />

They get their name from a hockey movie called Slapshot. This song compares Tiger Williams with a Doctor, a traffic cop, and eventually the big man upstairs saying "I'll bet he looks like Tiger Williams." For most of us, that is probably a little hard to picture, so I've done up a couple of "Artist's representations." I couldn't decide if it would be the young Tiger at the top of his game,

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc6ZvLVLdHGJoGzJi3nvIXB8yKawer0RdxHPPrp6M4eNHCjzOtdRU9pBqjtCkSaBH0FFlpat7d5cig8KPHVpNq8rsvuMPMcWwQuqB0eII3wwWI3A1zzvMgIsmVRULE-nZ7HBqgZoVaObI/s320/I'll+bet+he+looks+like+Tiger+Williams+Small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252205162944655986" />

or a more refined, more distinguished Tiger...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUSoP12JG9k_SghjV0NskyUzZHr9_nZD2NpzlYyo1lmf736l824GfOuU00oQGkF0YAQXDhwnPH8vI_-uw3GdkzGvxIV6IqpqXBRtXBSSt-M9BxOdOce9cPOvfXkwWOID0hSlKkofU6Z3o/s320/GodCropped.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252205166996598274" /> either way, it doesn't look like Davinci got it too far off.

This is all coming to mind as we are building a guitar for our local NHL hockey team, The Vancouver Canucks. His name is Christopher Gold, and his band is called

Christopher Gold and the Dirty Rotten So and Sos.

I know a million people that got Rocket From The Crypt tattoos over the last bunch of years. Sure, it got you into the shows for free, but it also got you into a community of real rock and roll fans. Everyone has their own reasons, but a part of it has got to be something about community building. What I really love is the community that is growing up around Sparrow. We're not just here to sell guitars. We're here because our lives revolve around rock and roll. It makes me feel great to see people in other parts of the world that feel so strongly about what we're doing - and I think that's the point. Sparrow isn't something that a few of us are doing here in Vancouver, it's a piece of the bigger community of people sold out for Rock and Roll all over the world. Thanks Christopher, that looks great on you!Sparrow Guitarshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12632435713360476982noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054488970310668434.post-72549968529153267852008-09-18T13:38:00.000-07:002008-09-18T14:37:47.916-07:00Life With A Vincent<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinIChx7LnwsUBPrJgF9sO9j1u7lAaTRqFBlw5sadJnyrbjNBY6n-sHj2QIJ3U8aP5Wtq4W_HqTBcyLoWDEZVe4BgW_Wi11iBMgdSFr8k3Qg4x9HIvskG80kYysxPS8Jn31eozMNQxeoyA/s320/Vincent+Black+Shadow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247478617950451826" />

A good friend of mine named Frank Rumbletone brought me a book yesterday. Published in 1975, it is simply entitled "Superbikes." The author chose 30 of his favorite sports bikes and wrote two pages about what they were like to ride. The following two pages are a full color photo of an example of the bike. The book is amazing! Today I read the pages on one of my all time favorite bikes, the Vincent Black Shadow. What a beautiful bike!

The author leaves us with these words of wisdom "Every man owes it to himself to spend a year or so with a Vincent Black Shadow. A long run, fast, with a good friend over some high wintry moors and the promise of an evening fireside chat after a meal at a good hotel. Life with a Vincent is a rich experience."

What I love here, is that these words are not written by someone who works for Vincent, or who has any stake in Vincent's sales. They are an absolutely, truely natural testimonial, and they make me so badly wish I was burning up some highway on one of those amazing motorcycles. I honestly have goosebumps, and a tear welling up in my eye over this. Man I love motorcycles! Pinball! Motorcycles!! To my surprise, the bike was nearly complete, just missing the gauges (who needs em), and a fuse box. I took the carbs off and gave em a good cleaning, put some new gas and plugs in and it fired right up! Turns out it was missing a bolt that holds the top end together, so there's oil all over the place, but it runs.

I chopped up the seat and flipped the bars upside down and backwards. It looks ridiculous! This morning I drove her in to work and as I write this, all I can smell is burnt oil. It's amazing.Sparrow Guitarshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12632435713360476982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054488970310668434.post-57730684956879116252008-09-12T12:04:00.000-07:002008-09-12T12:58:19.406-07:00At the heart of it
At the very heart of it, there has to be a real reason for doing the things we do. When I started Sparrow, I was considering my options. I didn't want to work for the man any more. I wanted to be building something that I could be proud of. I wanted to work every day in a community of people that I liked being around. I was hoping to build something that didn't feel like work.

I love riding motorcycles, playing pinball, and making rock and roll. I figured I wasn't a good enough mechanic to start a bike shop (although there's enough bikes at Sparrow that a guy could get confused!) and I really didn't see myself making a living with pinball. That left Rock and Roll. The music my band (The Vicious Cycles www.myspace.com/vcmc69) makes is not exactly a commercially viable proposition, and I'll bet the wife and kids don't want to be dragged around the world eating pizza. I decided it had to be guitars.

Since starting Sparrow, I've never had a work day that was long enough. I love working with the people that I work with. It feels like I'm doing something important. Hey, if any of you guys read this thing, I want you to know how much I appreciate working with you.

We work hard, but we enjoy ourselves. We listen to The Clash, or our friends' bands, and while we're building guitars we're thinking about the people who are going to end up playing them. Most of us play in bands, and we're thinking about how we want guitars to feel when we're playing them.

The heart of what I'm saying is a thank you to the people that I work with, and a thank you to the people who have bought our guitars. We're not a bunch of suits squeezing out units. We're a community of people who love rock and roll, and love building something that we care about, and that feels pretty good.Sparrow Guitarshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12632435713360476982noreply@blogger.com7
